Insurance Benefits
Ability Beyond Barriers, formerly Horry County Disabilities & Special Needs is a member of the South Carolina Public Employee Benefit Authority (PEBA). PEBA provides medical insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance and life insurance for eligible employees, their spouses, and children. Insurance coverage for eligible employees, their spouse and children begin on the 1st of the month following their first day of employment.

  • Medical Insurance Rates:
    The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Standard Plan rates for eligible employees are as follows:
    Employee Only Coverage: $97.68/month
    Employee and Spouse Coverage: $253.36/month
    Employee and Children Coverage: $143.86/month
    Employee and Family Coverage: $306.56/month

South Carolina Retirements Systems
Ability Beyond Barriers, formerly Horry County Disabilities & Special Needs participates in the South Carolina Retirement Systems (SCRS). SCRS provides a fixed monthly benefit based on a formula that includes your average final compensation, years of service credit and a benefit multiplier, not on your account balance at retirement. Your contributions to the system are a tax-deferred 9% of gross pay. Your account earns 4% interest compounded annually until you retire, or your account becomes inactive.

Paid Time Off

Ability Beyond Barriers, formerly Horry County Disabilities & Special Needs offers paid holidays, paid vacation time and paid sick time to eligible employees. These benefits begin after an eligible employee’s 31st of day of employment.

  • Paid Holidays
    Eligible employees of Ability Beyond Barriers, formerly Horry County Disabilities & Special Needs observe 13-paid holidays each year. Those holidays include New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Good Friday, Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, Day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Eve. Employees that are scheduled to work on a holiday are compensated for the hours worked and receive the holiday pay in addition.
  • Paid Vacation Time
    Ability Beyond Barriers, formerly Horry County Disabilities & Special Needs provides paid vacation time to eligible employees. The accrual of annual time will begin after an eligible employee’s 31st day of employment. The amount of time an eligible employee accrues increases with length of service to the organization. Employees are allowed to sell back one-half of their accrued vacation time twice a year. In addition, employees are able to accumulate and rollover up to 360-hours of vacation time from one fiscal year to the next.
  • Paid Sick Time
    Ability Beyond Barriers, formerly Horry County Disabilities & Special Needs provides paid sick time to eligible employees. The accrual of sick time will begin after an eligible employee’s 31st day of employment. The amount of time an eligible employee accrues increases with length of service to the organization. There is no cap on the amount of sick time an employee can accrue and rollover each fiscal year.
