HCDSN is fortunate to have its own ThinkFirst Chapter. ThinkFirst is an injury prevention program. A group of neurologist started out with a program called Feet First. It was designed to prevent head and spinal cord injuries due to diving accidents. Always jump in feet first!!
The program eventually expanded to the ThinkFirst Initiative. Health Educators take a program into schools and recreation programs to educate kids of all ages about preventing injuries by using the proper equipment and good judgment.
The focus this year has been on teens and distracted driving and driving under the influence.
Did you know that reading a text is MORE dangerous than drinking and driving?
Did you know that while reading a text and driving, your vehicle travels the length of a football field?
Did you know that South Carolina is now the #1 state in alcohol related fatalities?
Did you know that 1 in 5 fatalities are under the age of 25?
Did you know that car crashes are the number one killer of teens?
Did you know that 49% of these crashes are alcohol related?
Did you know that exceeding the speed limit or driving at an unsafe speed is the most common error in fatal collisions?
Statistics are great but let’s put this in recognizable terms. 30 kids aged 15 to 25 die every day in car crashes in the United States.
Not dramatic enough?
OK, that means that every week it’s like a giant 787 crashed and everyone on board died!
This is not acceptable.
Add to the fatalities the 330,000 young drivers injured in traffic collisions, then you have something way beyond an epidemic!
ThinkFirst and a program called Alive at 25 are working to inform and educate kids and their families about safe driving. They are working to help teens and young adults to commit to changing their driving behavior.
But as always, it starts at home.
Parents, put the phone down.
Do not drive under the influence.
Demonstrate good driving by driving for the conditions and within the speed limit.
Unsafe speed is the #1 cause of traffic collisions period.
#2 is failure to yield right of way.
Please check out, www.scaliveat25.org and/or www.scnsc.org.
It is time we are #1 for our beaches and golf courses and not for deadly car crashes!
FYI, distracted driving includes ANYTHING that takes your eyes off the road for any length of time!
